  • The Shadow at the bottom of the World

Have you ever read something that you know you shouldn’t read, yet you can’t stop reading it? That’s what The Shadow at the bottom of the World is like. I’ve been reading Thomas Ligotti’s (who was born in Detroit) collection of short stories and as I read them I feel myself becoming more disturbed and restless. Last Sunday I was sitting outside reading one of the stories in Prospect Park. It was a beautiful day, the sun was out, people were having a good time, and I was shivering trying to fight off the despair that I felt myself sinking into. Ligotti’s style is very similar to Poe’s. He creates wonderfully dark moods that seem to stick with you, and his stories have a sense of timelessness. The people and places he brings into his stories could be from 1900 or 2000, and it seems he did this quite purposefully. If you’re the type of person that likes to feel the darker side of reality occasionally, then go to the library and pick up this book. Otherwise, stay away. Very far away.

Also, Google finally came out with google docs, to go along with google spreadsheet. I’m never using Word again if I can help it!

It loads faster than Word, it runs quicker, and it’s easier to use. Also, you can instantly publish the document and invite others to view/edit it. The same goes for the spreadsheet. Basically it’s Word without all the extra crap that nobody uses anyways.

Basically Google has done what Netscape threatened to do back in the day, making the browser the focus for everything.

  • When I read Stephen Donaldson’s stuff, I felt the same way as you – I knew, as I started reading, that I was probably going to regret it. Lots of violence, pain, etc. And I went ahead and read it. I would not recommend someone read the stuff, even though his writing is, technically, good.

  • i have peculiar tastes in music. I primarily enjoy acoustical / instrumental, but my list transcends my preference. Note that a number of the artists have myspace, purevolume, or band web sites with individual songs on it that people can sample. If I had enough time, I would try to track down pointers to them. But life doesn’t seem to ever give me enough time to do all I want to do.

  • Vikas, okay so GDocs/Writely is sweet, except seriously, it’s a lot more like WordPad than word.

  • Basically, I just stumbled upon this site… and I’m glad I did:) I think Google Docs is the answer to my prayers. I’m usually not up for manipulating the margins (and general rules) of Microsoft Word so my resume will adhere to the socially accepted one-page rule, so perhaps Google will make me happy. Or at the very least not want to throw my computer against something solid and sturdy. Just perhaps… THANKS!

    :)
